We were so excited to be part of the first annual vegfest in London, ON! John and I did our first public talk about veganism and we called the 1 hour session "breaking vegan"! We're out to break all the misconceptions of what being vegan means and wanted to share with people all the great things that happen in your life when you make the choice to live compassionately and consciously.
We had a packed room with about 90 people, half of whom were actually omnivores! We loved that we were talking to veg-curious people who are making efforts to live healthier. We had great feedback, lots of questions, and it was so nice to meet tons of new people. A big thanks to Krista Kankula for organizing an awesome event and for extending the invite to hot for food blog. We hope to see you next year!
Just announced... we'll be speaking at our very first VegFest in London, ON! On Sunday Oct 25th from 1-2pm John and I will present Breaking Vegan. We want veganism to be less scary and as such we're breaking all the misconceptions of what it means to eat vegan and live a cruelty free life with hot for food. We'll be discussing how this crazy adventure all got started, what it's been like coming out of the vegan closet, plus how you can start living more compassionately one delicious meal at a time.
So come on out for a day of good food, great people, and support our talk at VegFest in London at the Western Fair District. More details can be found here.
The lovely organizers of VegFest London also just interviewed me for their blog feature, Compassion Files. Check that out here.
The 6th annual totally fabulous vegan bake-off went off without a hitch! I for sure thought someone would have passed out in a sugar coma. There were 60 bakers this year including one of the youngest to ever enter the bake-off. I had the honour of being a judge alongside chef and entrepreneur Doug McNish and city councillor Mike Layton. We had the very hard task (not really) of crowning best presentation, best amateur baker, and best professional baker. Which means I got to eat a total of 16 vegan treats to decide on the absolute best!
The big stand outs came from the pro side and a big congrats to Jennifer Bundock from apiecalypse now! vegan bakery and Amanda Somerville from through being cool vegan baking co. who crafted the top 3 entries. These are the 2 newest vegan bakers in toronto so it was nice to see them up there together. Their baking skills are certainly top notch so it made it especially hard to pick the best treat. Jennifer had 2 entries this year and both were in the finals, so that's got to tell you something. Her delicious nanaimo bars and sticky buns were totally worthy, but in the end we decided Amanda's pizza buns deserved the crowning achievement. They're just so addictive! Now that you're drooling, what are you waiting for? Hurry up and go check out these amazing toronto bakeries and stock up!
hot for food is giving you a chance to win a signed copy of this amazing new cookbook from author, vegan athlete, and the creator of Vega, Brendan Brazier. Brendan has helped changed the way millions of people eat including, me, Lauren Toyota. When I found out about Brendan and Vega in 2009 it helped jump-start my transition into veganism.
The Thrive Energy Cookbook is all about eating a balanced plant based whole food diet. It has recipes that are vegan, gluten-free, and specific ones for people transitioning into a more plant based lifestyle. The photos are pretty incredible too!
To enter, we want you to try out one of the recipes on our blog, post the pic to instagram, and tag @hotforfood. And you don't have to be vegan! You can be vegan curious or just like trying new recipes. We'll give you some ideas to start. I know people have been testing out our cauliflower buffalo wings. Or you could try a simple and fresh smoothie in the morning. And for those of you with a sweet tooth, bake up a batch of our favourite chocolate cranberry oatmeal cookies. Have fun and John and I can't wait to see your posts!
